Across the 100 best-selling pre-workout powders in the US, the labels list an average of about 254 mg of caffeine per serving (Jagim et al., 2019), roughly what three espressos contain, taken at once. Many people know the result: wired during training and flat a few hours later. A pre-workout without jitters starts from a smaller, measured dose: Smart Strips FCKN FIT has 20 mg of caffeine in an oral dissolvable strip that dissolves on the tongue in 7 to 30 seconds.
This guide explains where the jitters and the crash come from, what a clean pre-workout routine looks like for someone who trains three times a week around a full life, and how FCKN FIT before training and REFUEL after it fit into that routine.
Why do pre-workouts make me jittery?
Mostly because of the dose and the speed at which it arrives. A heavy scoop of caffeine in a shaker, drunk in two minutes on an empty stomach, puts a lot of stimulant into the system at once. In Australia, researchers who measured popular products found anywhere from 91 to 387 mg per serving (Desbrow et al., 2019), so the same scoop can mean very different amounts depending on the tub.
The result is a familiar picture. A pounding heart in the warm-up, a tight jaw, sweating before the first set. For someone in their twenties who lifts five times a week this may feel like part of the ritual. For a forty-two-year-old who trains at 7am before a working day, it often feels like too much, and the training itself suffers: hard to settle into the session, hard to control breathing, hard to judge effort.
Why do I crash after a pre-workout?
The crash is the other side of the peak. When a large stimulant dose fades, the tiredness it was masking returns, and it often returns at an inconvenient hour: 11am in the office, or 3pm with the children’s homework. Many people respond with coffee, and the cycle continues.
The evening is the quieter cost. Caffeine’s half-life in healthy adults averages about four hours and ranges from two to eight (EFSA, 2015). A 250 mg scoop at 6pm before an evening session is still partly in the body at midnight. Sleep becomes lighter, the night shorter, and tomorrow’s training starts from a deficit. Our guide on why you wake up at 4am describes how late caffeine affects the second half of the night.
What is a clean pre-workout?
A clean pre-workout gives you enough energy to start the session well, then gets out of the way. In practice that means three things: a caffeine dose you can count and plan around, no ingredients you take just for the sensation, and no sugar or sweetened drink attached to it. Most people who train for health, mood and longevity are better served by that than by the strongest scoop on the shelf.
FCKN FIT: energy before training, one strip on the tongue
Think of the moment before training as a short, fixed ritual. You change, you fill your water bottle, you lace your shoes. With FCKN FIT there is one more step: one strip on the tongue. It dissolves in 7 to 30 seconds, without water or a shaker, and the sachet is light and compact enough to live in a gym bag pocket or a jacket pocket.
FCKN FIT is for anyone who wants clean, measured energy, not only for fitness enthusiasts. The person on a bike to work, the parent who runs at 6am before the house wakes up, the swimmer who trains after the office, the woman in a Pilates class at lunchtime. Every strip contains:
Caffeine, 20 mg. A small, plannable amount, a quarter of a 60 ml espresso, which EFSA puts at about 80 mg. In the EU there are no approved health claims for caffeine at this dose, so we describe the ingredient and let you judge the effect.
Niacin, 10 mg (62.5% NRV). Niacin contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Chromium, 100 µg as amino acid chelate (250% NRV). Chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism.
L-Carnitine, 30 mg. A nutrient that helps carry long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are used for energy (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements). Studies of L-carnitine around exercise have used 1 to 2 g a day (Volek et al., 2002; Spiering et al., 2007), far more than one strip, so we list it without a claim.
Gamma-butyrobetaine (GBBgo), 5 mg. The body’s own precursor of carnitine: the enzyme that converts it is the last step in carnitine synthesis (Vaz et al., 1998).
Tamarind extract, 5 mg. A fruit extract that completes the formula.
The result we built FCKN FIT for: you start the session switched on, you train without a racing heart, and you go back to your day without a mid-morning crash. Effect within the hour, individual results vary.

Why a strip instead of a capsule or a drink
With Smart Strips, part of each dose is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, and for that part first-pass metabolism in the liver is significantly reduced. That lining is described in a pharmacology review as 4 to 4000 times more permeable than skin (Patel et al., 2011), which is why some medicines are placed under the tongue: sublingual nitroglycerin, for example, peaks in 6 to 7 minutes (NITROSTAT prescribing information). The figures Smart Strips uses for the format are up to 95% bioavailability, up to 4x faster absorption and up to 30% higher effectiveness. Caffeine itself is quick even when swallowed, peaking in about half an hour as a drink (Blanchard and Sawers, 1983), and a caffeine spray under the tongue was not faster than coffee in a 2025 study (McCarthy et al., 2025). How quickly a person feels it varies, so we speak of an effect within the hour, rather than a count of minutes. More about the format in What are oral dissolvable strips.
If the hard part of your day is mental work rather than training, the same principle sits behind Smart Strips FOCUS: 20 mg of caffeine with L-theanine. We explain the pairing in Focus without jitters.
How to time energy around training
Timing matters as much as the dose. A few practical points for people who train around a working day.
Morning sessions. If you train at 6 or 7am, take the strip while you change, before the warm-up. If you usually drink coffee first thing, you may find one strip before training is enough until mid-morning, and the second coffee can wait.
Lunchtime sessions. Eat something light at least an hour before, or plan the session before lunch. A strip as you walk into the changing room is easier on the stomach than a shaker of powder.
Evening sessions. This is where the dose matters most. If you train at 7pm and want to sleep at 11, a small, countable amount of caffeine is far kinder to your night than a full scoop. People who are sensitive to caffeine can try FCKN FIT on an earlier day first and see how they sleep.
Rest days. No strip is needed. Energy on rest days comes from sleep, food and daylight, and a clean pre-workout routine is easier to keep when it belongs to training only.
After training: REFUEL
The second half of a good session happens after it. Sore legs on the stairs the next morning, stiffness in the shoulders after a heavy back day, the feeling that you need two days off when you planned one. This is the moment REFUEL was designed for, one strip after training, while you are still in the changing room.
REFUEL contains three ingredients:
Liposomal curcumin, 40 mg. Curcumin is the main active compound of turmeric. The liposomal form wraps it in tiny lipid spheres. A 2022 meta-analysis of ten randomised trials looked at curcumin and muscle soreness after exercise (Beba et al., 2022). Those trials used doses many times higher than one strip, and we found no published human study of liposomal curcumin after exercise, so we list it as an ingredient only.
Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), 20 mg. A fatty acid amide that the body produces naturally. Two small trials in trained men gave 150 mg and 350 mg doses around exercise, with mixed results (Mallard et al., 2020; Schouten et al., 2024).
NAD+, 10 mg. A coenzyme that “acts as a cofactor in multiple reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions related to energy production” (Navas and Carnero, 2021).
The aim is simple: to make the post-training strip as automatic as the pre-training one, so that recovery gets the same attention as effort, and the next session starts from a better place.

Fitness Ready: both strips in one set
For people who want the routine in one box, the Fitness Ready bundle brings FCKN FIT and REFUEL together: one strip before training, one after. It is the easiest way to turn the two moments into a habit.
How a strip compares with a pre-workout powder
The comparison comes last on purpose, because it is a matter of format. A scoop of powder usually delivers a large stimulant dose, needs a shaker and water, and often comes with sweeteners and flavourings. A strip delivers a small, fixed amount, needs nothing, and goes on the tongue in the time it takes to tie your laces. The powder suits people who want a strong, felt effect and train late rarely. The strip suits people who train around work, sleep and family and want energy they can plan. A detailed comparison is in Caffeine strips vs pre-workout powder.
Safety notes
FCKN FIT contains caffeine. It is not recommended for children or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Count it with your other caffeine sources during the day. If you are sensitive to caffeine, have a heart condition or high blood pressure, take medication or have a medical condition, consult your doctor before use. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose on the pack. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
