The NMN Guide for 2026: NAD+, the Human Research, the Rules and the Formats

Smart Strips NMN oral dissolvable strips, box on gold rings

NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a molecule the body uses to make NAD+, a coenzyme that every cell needs to turn food into usable energy. In September 2025 the US FDA concluded that NMN is not excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement, and on 11 May 2026 the European Food Safety Authority published a positive opinion on β-NMN for adults at up to 300 mg a day (FDA, 2025; EFSA NDA Panel, 2026).

That is the short version. The longer one is more interesting, and more modest, than most of what is written about NMN online. This guide sets out what NMN is, what studies in people have and have not shown, how the rules differ between the US and the EU, and how the different formats compare, including the 80 mg oral dissolvable strip from Smart Strips.

What is NMN?

NMN is a nucleotide, a small building block that sits one step away from NAD+ in the body’s production line. Your cells make it from vitamin B3 forms and use it to keep their NAD+ supply topped up. Tiny amounts also occur naturally in foods such as broccoli, avocado and edamame.

As a supplement, NMN is produced as a white powder and sold in capsules, loose powder, sublingual tablets and, more recently, oral dissolvable strips.

What is NAD+ and why does it come up in every conversation about longevity?

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a helper molecule involved in hundreds of reactions, from converting nutrients into cellular energy to supporting enzymes that maintain and repair DNA. It also feeds a family of proteins called sirtuins, which have become a focus of ageing research.

Interest in NMN comes from one observation: small human studies have measured lower NAD+ levels in older adults than in younger ones. In skin samples from 49 people, NAD+ was lower the older the person was, in men and in women; in blood plasma from 30 adults aged 20 to 87, NAD showed the steepest decrease with age of all the related compounds measured (Massudi, 2012; Clement, 2019). If that decline matters, the reasoning goes, then supplying a precursor might help keep levels higher. It is an elegant idea. It is still being tested.

What do human studies on NMN show?

Here is the honest picture in 2026. A growing number of randomised, placebo-controlled studies in adults have been published, mostly small and short, lasting weeks to a few months (Igarashi, 2022; Yi, 2023; Liao, 2021; Kim, 2022).

What they tend to show consistently: NMN taken by mouth, at the doses studied, raises NAD+ related measures in the blood (Igarashi, 2022; Yi, 2023). It has also been well tolerated in the doses and periods studied: a 60-day trial reported no safety issues at up to 900 mg a day, and a four-week safety study at 1250 mg a day observed no severe adverse events (Yi, 2023; Fukamizu, 2022).

What is less consistent: effects on things people can feel or measure in daily life, such as walking speed, aerobic capacity, sleep quality or fatigue. Some studies report changes in specific measures, others do not, and the groups studied vary widely, from healthy older men to amateur runners (Igarashi, 2022; Liao, 2021; Kim, 2022).

What has not been shown: that NMN slows ageing, extends lifespan or makes anyone biologically younger in people.

What doses were used in the studies?

Human studies have tested NMN at intakes from 250 mg up to 1250 mg a day, considerably more than the 80 mg in a single Smart Strips NMN strip (Igarashi, 2022; Yi, 2023; Fukamizu, 2022). We say that plainly, because it shapes how you should think about our product: as a convenient daily habit, not as a replica of a clinical protocol.

What are the rules for NMN in 2026?

In the United States

On 29 September 2025, responding to a citizen petition from the Natural Products Association and the Alliance for Natural Health USA, the FDA revised its earlier interpretation and concluded that “NMN is not excluded from the definition of dietary supplement” (FDA, 2025).

In the European Union

On 11 May 2026 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a positive scientific opinion on β-NMN. Its expert panel concluded that the ingredient is safe for adults at up to 300 mg a day in food supplements, under the proposed conditions of use, excluding pregnant and breastfeeding women (EFSA NDA Panel, 2026). There are no authorised EU health claims for NMN, which is why we describe it only as a daily habit.

For you as a buyer, the practical takeaway is simple: regulators on both sides of the Atlantic have looked closely at NMN in the past year, and a brand that explains this openly is a better sign than one that avoids the subject.

NMN formats compared: capsules, powder, sublingual, strip

The molecule is the same in every format. What changes is how it reaches you and how easy it is to take every day.

Capsules. The most common format. Easy to dose, no taste, swallowed with water. Swallowed NMN passes through the gut and the liver before it reaches circulation, like any oral supplement.

Powder. Flexible and often cheaper per gram. It needs a scale or scoop, it can clump with humidity, and it has to be mixed into something.

Sublingual tablets and powders. Held under the tongue so that part of the dose can be absorbed through the lining of the mouth. The portion absorbed through the oral mucosa reaches the circulation without first passing through the liver, so for that portion first-pass metabolism is significantly reduced (Hua, 2019). Whether this makes a measurable difference for NMN specifically has not yet been studied in people.

Oral dissolvable strips. A thin film that dissolves on the tongue, combining the mucosal route with a fixed dose and a format light and compact enough to go anywhere with you. The lining under the tongue is only 100 to 200 µm thick (Hua, 2019), which is one reason some medicines are given there, and in clinical studies oral films of several medicines delivered the same amount of active ingredient as the matching tablet (Radicioni, 2017; Park, 2018). Those are drug data, not NMN data. Smart Strips summarises its QuickRelease™ format as up to 95% bioavailability, up to 4x faster absorption and up to 30% higher effectiveness. A full side-by-side comparison is in NMN Strips vs NMN Capsules, and the format itself is explained in What Are Oral Dissolvable Strips.

How to read an NMN label

Whatever format you choose, four details on the pack tell you most of what you need.

The amount per serving, in milligrams. Some products list “NMN complex” or a blend. You want the NMN figure on its own, clearly stated.

What else is in it. Many NMN products add resveratrol, TMG or other ingredients. That is a choice, not a flaw, but it means you are no longer comparing like with like.

Where and how it is made. Look for a stated manufacturing standard, such as a cGMP certified facility, and for batch numbers and expiry dates printed on every unit.

What it promises. A label that talks about reversing ageing or turning back your biological clock is telling you more about its marketing than about NMN. Restraint is a good sign.

Storage matters too. Individually sealed doses travel better than a jar that is opened every morning in a steamy bathroom.

Smart Strips NMN: 80 mg as a daily habit

Picture a weekday morning past 40. The coffee is brewing, the phone already has twelve messages, and somewhere on a shelf there is a jar of capsules you bought with good intentions in January. It is half full in October. The problem was never the molecule. It was remembering, swallowing, and keeping a jar wherever you happened to be.

Smart Strips NMN is built around that reality. One oral dissolvable strip contains 80 mg of NMN and nothing else. It dissolves on the tongue in 7 to 30 seconds, without water, so the habit fits next to brushing your teeth or on the way out of the door. Part of the dose is absorbed through the mucosa of the mouth, and for that portion first-pass metabolism in the liver is significantly reduced.

Two honest points belong next to that. First, NMN is not something you feel. There is no buzz, no warmth, no immediate change; it is meant for regular use over months, which is why we communicate it as a habit and not as a sensation. Second, 80 mg is a moderate daily amount, below the doses most human studies have used (Igarashi, 2022; Yi, 2023). If you want to follow a specific study protocol, discuss it with your doctor.

The sachets are light and compact and go in any carry-on, so a business trip does not break the routine. Many people pair NMN with IMMUNE in the morning or with BEAUTÉ after breakfast. Take it as directed on the pack. Find the formula at Smart Strips NMN.

What NMN will not do

NMN will not reverse ageing, erase wrinkles or replace sleep, movement and a decent diet. Any product that promises to make you “years younger” is ahead of the evidence. The habits with the strongest support for healthy ageing are still the unglamorous ones: consistent sleep, daily movement, strength training, time outdoors and close relationships. NMN, at best, is a small addition to that base.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition. NMN is not intended for children.
